Best car tire choices for 2020 - BFGoodrich Advantage Sport T/A

My Best Car Tire Choices

Buying tires can be confusing, there are so many different kinds and sizes to choose from.

Everyone claims to have the best tires but all they can talk about are price and specifications.

The best tires are not always the most expensive.

And that’s what makes my best tire choices different. I’m a hands-on owner at Kenwood Tire and I make it my business to see which tires work for which types of driver, so I can make an honest recommendation.

I get to see first-hand how tires stand up to the wear and tear of Massachusetts roads. I rotate and balance tires. Customers tell me about their real-world driving experiences in New England.

Here are my 3 best car tire choices for 2020 –

If you’re a “spirited” driver, you’ll need a performance tire. The BFGoodrich Advantage Sport T/A has the best combination of handling, all-season traction, and tread-wear I have seen. The tires wear even because their shoulders are strong.

The cool-looking tire has a wider tread footprint, but what sets the BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport apart for me, is the full-depth tire sipes that provide all-season capabilities throughout the tire’s life.

If you just want to get in and drive, no matter the weather, you’ll need an all-weather tire optimized for winter driving.

The new Michelin CrossClimate 2 has the “three-peak mountain snowflake” (3PMSF) symbol, showing the tire has passed government testing to be considered severe snow service-rated.

Rides nice, needs to be broken in and well-maintained, but it looks like the new king of all-weather tires.

Unlike traditional winter tires, the trade-off in handling and treadwear of the Michelin CrossClimate 2 is not as noticeable as other all-weather tires like the Nokian WRG4 or Toyo Celcius.

If you just want the best value in a tire, it’s hard to beat the General AltiMAX RT43. This is the benchmark smooth-riding, all-season tire that checks all the boxes on dry, wet, and snow traction. Made in North America, prices are reasonable and customers say this tire is great in the wet weather with a quiet ride.

With a 75,000-mile treadwear warranty and 45-day customer satisfaction pledge, the General AltiMAX RT43 is my best-value recommendation.

Find Out About Tire Cracking

Most drivers wear their tires out before tire cracking becomes a problem.

But if your tires sit for months at a time without being used, they’ll start to crack prematurely. That’s because tire rubber uses a chemical called antiozonant, to stop tires from cracking due to ozone, UV, and road-grime.

Antiozonant is also what makes tires turn brown, known as “tire bloom“, is only effective while the tires are being used, going through their normal heating and cooling cycles.

That’s why most of the bad tire cracking I see, is on trailer, motorhome, classic, collector, and performance car tires.

Tires need to be driven!  Even if you have nowhere to go, getting your tires hot occasionally will make them last longer.

Tire cracking is part of a tire’s life.

After 2-3 years you’ll start to see light sidewall, shoulder, and tread cracking. These cosmetic ozone and weather cracks are usually normal wear and tear caused by a combination of miles driven and age.

But sometimes manufacturing errors can also cause abnormal tire cracking – If your tires are less than 3-years old and showing significant cracks, contact the tire manufacturer’s customer service department directly.

Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing your tires every 6 years, whether they’re worn out or not.

At Kenwood Tire we use Michelin’s Ozone or Weather Cracking Visual Tool to make a determination.

If your tires have signs of cracking or dry-rot, send me a picture for an opinion.

Steps you can take to protect your tires.

  • Cleaning – Use a special tire and wheel cleaner every time you wash your car. I use Meguiars at the shop because it’s safe to use on all wheels.
  • Protection – It’s ok to use a tire protectant. Make sure it’s not silicone or petroleum-based because they speed-up tire cracking and dry-rot.

I use Wizard’s because it’s a water-based and doesn’t leave a residue.and won’t sling protectant all over your car!

If you’re concerned about tire cracking, email me a picture and I’ll give you my opinion free.
